Top 40 Number 1 is a Netherlands-based internet radio station channel broadcasting from Hilversum that is one of the Netherlands’ most-heard commercial radio stations, mixing pop, R&B, dance, and other contemporary hits. The chart itself is an institution; it has been hosted and broadcast by various stations based in Hilversum, the “Media City” of the Netherlands. From 1993 until 2018, the Dutch Top 40 was broadcast on Radio 538, a Top 40-oriented radio station based in Hilversum known for playing current pop and chart hits. The Dutch Top 40 was inspired by American hit parades; it was launched on January 2, 1965, by the offshore station Radio Veronica. It is the Netherlands’ best-known weekly music chart, listing the country’s most popular singles.
